A County School Christmas Program

Everyone comes, Moms and Dads, Grandpas and Grandmas

Neighbors, friends, everyone comes to the little white, one-room school.

Kerosene lanterns are hung, electricity isn’t here yet.

The teacher’s desk is moved aside to make room for a tiny stage.

Then a white sheet is tacked to the ceiling—the stage curtain.

Off come heavy winter coats, overshoes, scarves, and mittens.

Grownups fill the desk seats. There’s a sleepy baby in Mom’s arms.

School kids wearing their very best clothes, shivering with excitement.

Soon it’s time to say your “piece” and sing “Up on the Housetop.”

Now everyone sings, “Jingle Bells.”

A popcorn ball treat! Merry Christmas to all!
